About Ko-Imari

In the 1610s, potters in Arita fired Japan's first porcelain. It left the country through the nearby harbour of Imari, and Europe named it for the port rather than the kilns. Dutch traders carried it to Amsterdam by the shipload, and within decades the cobalt blue, iron red and gold of Ko-Imari - Old Imari - was filling the palaces of Europe. Augustus the Strong of Saxony collected thousands of pieces and set his own porcelain works at Meissen to copying them.

This piece is not Arita porcelain. It is Mino ware from Gifu, a LAKOLE original that borrows that four-hundred-year-old pattern language and its gold detailing - the look of a treasure, on something meant to be used.
