About Aizu-nuri

Lacquerware came to Aizu, in the mountains of Fukushima, in the 1590s, when the incoming lord brought his own lacquer craftsmen with him and had the surrounding hills planted with lacquer trees. Within a century Aizu was shipping its work across Japan and out through Nagasaki - the first region in the country to make lacquerware at real scale, rather than piece by piece for the nobility.

That everyday spirit is still the point. Patterns like kikko, the tortoiseshell hexagon, come straight from the old repertoire, but this piece is made in resin rather than wood and urushi so that it can be used without thinking: light, hard to chip, microwave and dishwasher safe.
